Beyond Fishing — Water, Wrecks & Weirdness

Bimini's non-fishing reputation rests on three unrelated things: a shark research station, a shipwreck, and a genuinely odd cluster of myths. They have nothing in common except that all three are within a short boat ride of Alice Town.

The sharks are the strongest draw and the most seasonal. Great hammerhead season runs roughly January to April, which puts the island's best diving in its coolest, windiest months — the opposite of the summer-holiday assumption. The Bimini Biological Field Station, universally called the Shark Lab, has been working here for decades and runs public tours; it is a research station that accepts visitors rather than an attraction that does science, and the distinction shows in what you get.

The SS Sapona is the one everybody photographs. A concrete-hulled cargo ship built during a wartime steel shortage, driven aground in the 1926 hurricane, used by rum-runners during Prohibition, and still standing out of the water off South Bimini. It is shallow enough that a snorkeller sees most of what a diver does, which is unusual enough to be worth planning around.

Then the weird side, and we try to handle it carefully. Bimini Road is a half-mile line of flat limestone blocks found in 1968 and tied ever since to Edgar Cayce's Atlantis prophecy; geological consensus attributes it to natural beachrock. The Healing Hole is a sulphur spring deep in the mangroves of Bonefish Creek that local belief credits with treating arthritis and gout. The Dolphin House in Alice Town was hand-built over decades by local historian Ashley Saunders out of shells, tile and found objects.
