Here is the thing people say about Bimini: the drop-off is a mile off the beach. It gets repeated on every charter page and nobody seems to have measured it. So we did. On our section the seabed sits in 46 ft of water 1.11 miles west of the island’s ocean-facing shore, and 600 ft of water is at 1.38 miles. Which means you can run the edge with a Bimini captain and be back at the dock for lunch.
The saying is right, in other words, and that is not something you can assume about sayings. What it buys you is time: a wall this close puts bluewater minutes from the marina rather than hours, so a half day is a real half day instead of a commute, and a two-hour weather window is a usable one. It is the only genuine structural advantage this island has over anywhere else within reach of South Florida.
What we measured, and how
There is no published depth profile for a Bimini shelf-to-Stream section. We went looking for one before drawing our own and found nothing canonical — NOAA’s high-resolution coastal elevation models stop at the US border and do not cover Bahamian water at all. So the chart below is not a redraw of anyone else’s figure. As far as we can tell it does not exist anywhere else.
The source is the GMRT GridServer, a public multi-resolution topography grid, at roughly 55 to 60 metres per cell here — several times finer than the global bathymetry sets most people reach for at this latitude. We sampled a straight west-east line at 25.7365°N, 520 points across 18 miles. Each point is the mean of the grid cells within a thousandth of a degree of latitude either side, which is about 220 metres of across-track averaging. That kills single-cell sounding noise without shifting any feature along the line.

Where the bank actually stops
Read the chart left to right and you are travelling east to west, from the bank towards Miami. The island itself is 188 metres across where this line crosses it. That is not a typo. North Bimini is a sand hook and at this latitude you could walk its full width in a couple of minutes.
West of the shore the shelf runs out almost flat, and then it does not. Heres the sequence, measured from the ocean-facing shore:

Look at the middle of that table. From 46 ft to 600 ft costs you 0.28 of a mile of horizontal travel. Under half a minute at cruising speed. In that distance the bottom drops by more than the height of most office towers, and it keeps going — the deepest point in our whole sampled line is 2,640 ft, 12.9 miles west of a beach where people are standing in ankle-deep water.
Why a mile matters to a boat
Deep water near shore is not rare. Deep water near shore with a bank behind it is the unusual part, and it is the part that makes the fishing. The Great Bahama Bank is thousands of square miles of shallow, sunlit sand producing food, and it drains against this edge. Add the Gulf Stream running north over the top, carrying bait and migrating pelagics past the same contour all year, and you have a pantry pressed up against a highway.
In practice that shows up as three separate fisheries stacked within sight of each other. The flats on the lee side, in water sometimes under a foot deep. The reef and its edge. And then the wall, where the blue marlin hold on that same contour from spring into summer. Most destinations make you pick one of those and drive to it. Here you can fish two in a day because nothing is far from anything.
It also changes what a bad forecast means. When the run is short, a two-hour weather window is a usable window. Thats the quiet advantage — not that the fishing is better on the best day, but that there are more days you can go at all. If you are picking a base, which docks put you closest to it is a more useful question than which hotel has the nicer pool.
What this section cannot tell you
One line at one latitude. That is what we have, and it would be dishonest to stretch it.
It cannot give you a running distance from any particular marina mouth to the 600 ft contour, because the shape of the edge changes as you move north and south along the island and we have not sampled those sections. Anyone quoting you a per-dock figure has either measured it themselves or made it up, and you should ask which. It also says nothing about the bottom on the bank side, where the interesting question is not depth but tide.
What it does settle is the headline. The drop-off really is about a mile off the beach, on this section, measured rather than remembered. If you want the same geology from the current’s point of view instead of the seabed’s, the rest of the case for why Bimini fishes the way it does picks up there — and if you would rather see the water temperature seams that form over this edge, we sampled those too. The records that came off it are a separate and slightly awkward story.

Every depth and distance above is computed from the sampled transect at build time. No figure on this page was copied from another site, including the 'about a mile' claim, which we treated as a hypothesis until it was measured.
